Type Foundry TermsBeta

Font licensing used to be simple: one typeface, one price, done. Today foundries charge by company size, pageviews, or app count, add surcharges for logo use, and separate web from desktop. Staying on top of this avoids costly surprises and licensing gaps.

Status & Distribution

No longer sold directly since March 2025 — the library is available through MyFonts and Monotype Fonts.

Important note
Since March 2025, Colophon no longer sells through its own website. The library is part of Monotype Fonts and available via MyFonts. License terms, pricing, and availability are now governed by the respective distributor.
Desktop pricing basis
Desktop licenses are measured by number of users — the number of computers on which the font is installed. Cumulatively expandable.
Term
Depends on the distributor model — at MyFonts, webfonts are frequently offered as annual subscriptions.
02

License Types

Desktop, Web, App, and ePub are separate licenses — all available via MyFonts or Monotype.

Desktop / Print
A Desktop license typically covers 1–3 users at one location: print, logo creation, working on-screen and in DTP software. PDF embedding is included. More users and multiple locations are possible; does not cover web or app use.
Web
Self-hosted webfonts, per individual website. Tiered by monthly pageviews. Agencies may not share a web license across multiple websites.
Per website
App
Separate license for iOS and Android apps, distinct from Desktop and Web. One-time fee, tiered by app price and estimated downloads.
Per app
ePub / e-doc
Embedding in electronic publications, measured by number of publications — each issue counts separately.
03

Additional Costs & Special Cases

Logo use is part of the Desktop license — but check the EULA per typeface as terms may vary.

Logo / Wordmark
Logo creation is part of the Desktop license; a logo on a website is covered by the Desktop license as it is treated as an image.
Included in Desktop
PDF embedding
Included in the Desktop license — but does not apply to embedded web or app use.
Included in Desktop
Geography / commercial products
At MyFonts, restrictions may apply depending on the typeface — regarding logos / trademarks, number of locations, or products intended for sale. Check the EULA for each case.
04

Discounts & Trials

Trial fonts available for testing — student discounts: check with the distributor.

Trial fonts
When requesting trials, a trial license applies: permits testing the font across various media, but must be upgraded before productive use.
Test use only
Students
Terms have been subject to the distributor since the Monotype acquisition — check directly with MyFonts or Monotype.
